Sonrise Camp Update (July 6, 2014)

Steph with friend

At the end of June, my friends from Mistissini’s RC or Readaptation Centre came to visit the Doulos Team in Ottawa. The RC is a lock-down facility for youth who are a danger to themselves or others. I had the privilege of getting to know the youth when I visited Mistissini in mid-June.

We took the youth to Laser Quest, Skyzone, Parliament Hill and Mooney’s Bay. We shared meals, laughs and tons of fun.

I am currently in Mistissini running Vacation Bible School at Sonrise Camp and recently visited my friends at the RC. While I was there, I received some awesome news: One of the boys we’ve been working with will be returning to live with his family in the coming weeks and one of the girls I connected with got permission to attend a week-long camp I will be running in another Cree community, Waswanipi (3 hours away from Mistissini), in mid-July. It is such a blessing to continue walking with this young lady.

I will fill you in on the amazing Cree children I’ve met real soon. Thank you for all of your prayers and support! Many blessings!

Waajya! (Good-bye in Cree)

So much has happened over the last few months. The most exciting news for us was the birth of our grandson Joshua to proud parents Dave and Lucy over in Abu Dhabi! Joshua is now 6 weeks old and is doing great. He truly is a miracle! We are so looking forward to seeing him in 16 days!!

I have attached an update of our recent ministry activities as well as our upcoming ones. I cannot thank you enough for your prayers and encouragement as they really make a huge difference each and every day. Please keep us in prayer for this week as we have about 30 Cree youth and leaders coming down to Ottawa to take part in a number of different activities and daily workshops which I am leading.

January 2014
A (Mostly) Serious Family News and Update
2013 was a great year for ministry opportunities and I am very grateful for the open doors and the favour shown to me by the Lord. Here is a quick snapshot of the year in review.

In Ottawa we had two great events that Doulos had the opportunity to play a key role in: No Other Name, held on Good Friday, attended by nearly 900 youth and youth workers from a large number of churches in the greater Ottawa area; and Rock the River Two.

Rock the River Two was a follow up to the event held in partnership with the Billy Graham Association in 2012 but this time it was put on by the local churches in Ottawa working independently from the BGA. We ended up transferring the event from an outdoor event to an indoor one just one month prior to its happening for financial reasons. However, it was a huge success with over 4000 people attending throughout the day. Unfortunately the restrictions of being indoors meant that around 700 people were turned away (youth) as there was just not enough room to accommodate the turnout.

Hey there,

It is hard for me to believe that the summer is mostly over and that the beginning of September is already upon us!

We had a great summer with some excellent volunteer teams coming up to help us run six weeks of camps with kids and youth.

I have attached a report on some of the camps written by two of my summer interns Keltie Mask and Emma Hoch. They spent over four weeks working up there this summer.

Thank you for the investment you have made in helping all of these plans become a reality.  But thank you most of all for putting smiles on the faces of these kids and hope in their hearts!

Blessings on you,
Paul

I leave tomorrow morning for Mistissini to begin my summer travels with our camps up north. Your prayers are deeply appreciated! The Lord has raised up around me some great people this summer and here is a quick look at our summer team and the camps they will be involved with.

  • Ben Peltz has joined me for two months to help out with the planning, preparation and spiritual content of the camps we are doing at Sonrise in Mistissini. Ben is doing graduate work at Tyndale in Toronto.
  • Keltie Mask, a teacher in the Ottawa area, has joined us for six weeks to help out with the planning for the kids camps happening over the next four weeks at Sonrise. She is also going to be working with us at our teen camp.
  • Emma Hoch, in her third year at Mount Allison university, is my summer intern and she has been helping out with our Rock the River event (http://rocktheriverottawa.com/) happening here in Ottawa the end of September, as well as planning for our summer camps. She will be serving up there as well for the next four weeks.

Your prayers for them are greatly appreciated! We are trusting the Lord to meet all of their needs as well as making His Presence and love felt through them!

We are also sending a team to Chiiwetau again this summer July  21 – 27.  They are being led by Gina Byun and Shawn Bai. They will be doing the kids program as well as some very creative and exciting teen outreach activities. Please pray for them that they have real favour with the kids and teens!!

My schedule is has me travelling to Mistissini, Waswanipi, Chisasibi, Chiiwetau and then Sonrise Teen Camp that we now call Ignite. I am looking forward to all of this as I have been surrounded by such great leaders who are truly taking on the dream to see lives changed, hope planted and love experienced all in the Name of Jesus!

And my special thanks to all of you who help make these moments possible!! Blessings on you!! I will keep you updated as much as I can during the next month!

I thought for this news and prayer update I would give you a bit of a snapshot of the last half of the year as well as a bit of a look at what lies ahead. It has been your steadfast commitment to journeying with us that has helped all of this come to be!

The summer of 2012 was amazing in that we took on some new challenges and were so amazingly pleased with the journey and the results. Please click here to continue reading and to see some great photos!

July 15, 2012
Hey there,

I am leaving tomorrow morning at 7AM for Chiiwetau, which is just outside of Waswanipi with a great team of volunteers who are going to help run the children’s program and a teen program for two weeks there. I will then journey on from there to Mistissini to help another great team of volunteers run a senior high teen camp for a week. This has never been done before in Mistissini where the teens come to a camp that is just for them and stay over for a week!

I will also be doing some work with our mentoring program that we have started up there.

Here are my prayer requests:

  • For travel and safety as the teams make their way to their destinations up north.
  • For us to truly reflect the love of Jesus to all those we meet.
  • For health to stay strong and for all of us to know how to speak life to all around us.
  • That we might be able to help build eternal memories as we share Jesus in word and action!
  • I will be gone for three weeks which is a stretch, that it will go smoothly and well.

Blessings on you!!
Paul

I am in Waswanipi today about to head further north to Oujé Bougoumou, and then on to Mistissini. The camps are going well in all of the communities and I am truly blessed to be able to spend this time up here! Here is a point form summary of what has been happening and some things to pray for in the days ahead. The top picture at the right of this page is for you to appreciate that sometimes loving these kids also means loving their puppy!!

  • Camps in all 8 communities are going well, kids are coming, laughing, learning about God’s plan for their lives, learning how to live with a dream, and most of all knowing they are affirmed and loved.
  • I spoke at a camp this past Sunday and it was wonderful to share with this small group of believers from the Word as well as a number of our team from the Mistissini area. They love the Lord and they love their community and want to see their youth connect with Jesus! At the end, one of the elders prayed for the youth in their community with heartfelt cries of real passion for the pain they face daily. I was so deeply reminded of why we are doing what we are, and how this hope must come from Jesus!!
  • I met with a small local leadership team in one of the communities who asked if before I went back south (what they call going to Ottawa) I do a weekend retreat for young adults. I looked at my schedule with them and agreed to do it August 5-7, at the end of my time here. Please pray for this time, for the messages they have asked me to speak on grace and love, and for their desire to see these young adults established in their walk with Jesus.
  • Their vision and desire did not end there! They have also booked me for a week in the summer of 2012 to help them run a senior high school camp at their property to show them how it can be done!
  • I am speaking at a community wide gathering this coming Sunday at a place called “Old Post”. It is a community wide church service held on an island where a large number of the community have been gathering for the past two weeks. It is the first joint service ever between the two churches here in the community and they have asked me to speak at it, which is a huge honour! We currently have a volunteer team up there running a type of VBS and activity time for kids and youth. Please keep this in prayer!!
  • Pray for my time doing the Intern training with our Cree young adults who work alongside of us. This is a great opportunity for me to build into their lives on a personal level!
  • I am also serving in a small team of Cree Youth leaders to help them develop a one year plan for helping the youth in their community to build character! Please pray for wisdom there!
  • Please pray that our camps will finish strong in the next two and a half weeks that we have left here. The summer is going by fast!

Your prayers are of great influence. For they join the eternal with the temporal, and help unleash here on earth the authority and love of the One, Our Lord Jesus Christ, who rules over all! Even the shortest of prayers is always heard!

Blessings and love, Paul

Hello there,

I am heading back up north tomorrow morning (Monday), having been home this past weekend to perform a wedding for Matt and Holly Starra!

I am looking forward to going back up to the northern communities, where I will have opportunity to do some leadership training, speaking to youth councils, youth leaders and the youth themselves. I have also been asked to speak at one of the churches at one of the camps, and also to do a one day seminar for young adults and young married couples on living out the Christian faith.

I will also be doing some leadership training for our Cree interns, something I am very much looking forward to.

I will be up there for the next three weeks, so your prayers are deeply appreciated. We have seen so many positive things happen and not without some serious opposition. But I was reminded that we do not move towards victory, we are already victorious because of all that Jesus has done for us and therefore we move out from a place of victory to take hold of that which has already been accomplished for us.

There are some updated pictures on the website and we will keep trying to post updates there throughout the summer.

Blessings on you and thanks for helping to make all of this possible!!

Paul

Our teams have begun departing for northern communities and the adventure has begun! I am leaving today at 7:30 with 24 team members in five vehicles to go to Waswanipi, OJ, and Mistissini.

Please pray for safe travels and for our arrival in the communities to have the favour of the Lord! We need His grace and favour as we begin our camps on Monday, July 4!

For more information on the camps and pictures of the teams from our training camp please go to browse our website. Perhaps you could pray for a different team each day?

Thanks for the incredible blessing of journeying with me!

At the end of a week of training for the youth running the Cree camps this year, there is air of excitement and anticipation about what the next weeks will hold. We have an amazing crew assembled to run these camps and care for the kids in each community. It is with awe that I watch how quickly each group bonds and the easy camaraderie that these youth have with one another. I can't wait to see how the next weeks unfold!

Click here to see pictures of the different teams from our week of training.

Click here to visit our camps page for links, info and pictures from 2010.

Please check back throughout the summer as our team leaders update about their camps and activities. Camp pages will be updated during the camps as regularly as possible.

Thanks so much for praying for us last week while we were in Mistissini, OJ, and Waswanipi. Here is a quick summary of some of the highlights!

  • Our meetings with the three Recreational Directors went extremely well. The programs for all three of these communities has grown and we are excited about being back there!
  • We had a very good week of meeting with the youth and youth workers. Some good relationships were established with new youth that we will have the chance to build upon when we are there again in 12 days.
  • We were given some smoked walleye for supper one night!!
  • We met a small group of kids one night at one of the nearby schools in Mistissini and began a game of tag with them on the play structure at their initiative. Attached is a picture of one of the kids who are all looking forward to our camp starting in 12 days! Putting a smile on their face is a wonderful accomplishment!

We open up our camps in 7 different communities starting a week from this Sunday, on July 4th. We have our staff training days June 28-30, for around 40 of our own staff and another 25 Cree interns who will be joining us! Please pray for this time of preparation!

News Update - April 2011

Thanks for your prayers for our No Other Name event on Good Friday! We had around 1000 people there! The number of people who came out was amazing.

But most importantly was the response of the youth. In amongst the fun events of the day (we had an inflatable play station area that took up several hundred square feet as well as a dodge ball tournament) and the unexpected fire alarm which meant evacuating the school during our opening (the alarms were set off by the smoke machine used by the band) there was a huge air of expectancy amongst all who came. They came to meet with Jesus on a historical day that is all about Him and His demonstration of love for us. And a large number of them felt they did just that and indicated so, not only in their responses to us but most importantly, in their retelling of events to their parents about their experiences that day.

We are humbled by way God has used us. Please pray now for a Spirit of refreshing to be upon our leadership team.
